This article will explain why Metal Pay may ask you to review and certify your tax information.
Metal Pay is required to collect certain tax information to comply with applicable U.S. tax reporting and withholding requirements.
The tax form you complete depends primarily on whether you are considered a U.S. person or a foreign person for U.S. federal tax purposes.
If you are a U.S. person
U.S. persons generally complete Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification.
Form W-9 provides information such as your:
- Legal name
- Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), such as an SSN or ITIN
- U.S. tax status
- Certification that the information you provided is correct
Metal Pay uses this information to comply with applicable IRS reporting requirements.
If you are not a U.S. person
Non-U.S. individuals will generally be asked to complete Form W-8BEN, Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding and Reporting.
Form W-8BEN allows you to certify that you are a foreign person for U.S. tax purposes.
You provide Form W-8BEN to Metal Pay rather than submitting it directly to the IRS.
Note: Your appropriate tax form is based on your U.S. tax status, not simply where you currently live.
If you are unsure which form applies to you, please consult a qualified tax professional.
